Men's Counselling - Gold Coast
Did you know that half of Ghita Therapy clients are male aged from 20 - 70?
The Stress of Covid
It used to be that more women than men sought counselling. And that there was a stigma for seeing a counsellor or psychologist. And yet, since Covid19 our lives have changed in sudden and surprising ways; suddenly, we’re working from home, spending more time with our spouses and families, yet so many of us feel isolated and alone. It is easy to feel like things are out of control and we’re powerless to control our own lives.
The Empty Cup
Usually, our default mindset is: “Well, I’m coping right now, I can just get through the day and deal with it later.” But so often we put it off again, and again, and again, until one day we reach for our cup and find that it is completely empty. We ask ourselves, “How did it get this bad?”, and we wonder why we didn’t do anything about it sooner.
Men are generally good at putting things off and numbing their emotions. The feelings go in a mental pot (called ‘deal with it later’) and suddenly the pot gets full and the lid flies off. Interestingly, the symptoms for depression and anxiety look different in men to how they manifest in women.
Relationships
Examining the Changing Roles of Men in Society
Modern times call for new skills and more acceptance of fluid gender roles. With both sexes in the work place, shared parenting and chores are now the norm. Relationships can be hugely fulfilling yet confusing and complex nowadays. Many people have trouble understanding what their roles are because they look different from the roles of their parents and grandparents.
Old fashioned ideals about displaying emotion have done enormous damage on the modern male psyche. Previous generations were encouraged to self-regulate, not to show vulnerability, to express themselves or show any weakness. This old fashioned conditioning caused emotional confinement and manifested outwards as various types of aggression, such as rigid social norms, acceptance of aggressive macho role models, bullying, projected anger and chauvinism. Imagine holding in emotions for a lifetime! Moreover, the last few years have added stress to already stressful modern life. How is one to stay sane and regulate emotion? There is only so much that the gym, surfing and vitamins can do...
